âThis is⦠troubling,â a disgruntled, matriarchal, feminine voice murmured.
âThis is a preliminary, of course,â the investigator shrugged. âItâll take more time to get something inside the house and confirm.â
The woman set down the photos, pictures of compromising sexual acts spilled across the bench. In the dark of night, the shadows covered her like a flowing cloak. She was confident that nobody would recognize her in passing. And those who would, wouldnât see through the glamor she put over herself.
âIâve no need to see such filth,â the woman denied the unspoken question the investigator had asked when he was first approached. But this time, he held his tongue. âJust the knowledge he has taken two females into his home is enough.â She added acerbically.
âThatâs the thing that confuses me most about this,â the investigator frowned. âI was always under the impression that Gadriel lived there. Not this⦠weeb.â
âGadriel is not your concern and you would do well to concentrate on the target,â she waved off his concerns, her aura flaring slightly in warning. He kept his mouth shut. He wasnât stupid enough to pursue that line of questioning, but there was something he felt needed to be said.
âItâs justâ¦â he licked his lips nervously. âIf heâs still there. His lawyer team isââ
âIâll handle the lawyers,â she waved off his concerns once more. âAll I need you to do is track whoever goes in and out of that house. I want everything you can find, withoutâ¦â she grimaced. âWithout subjecting me to their vile practices.â
The investigator thought about that OTHER drive in his pocket, and decided that it was likely best to destroy it. This job was sounding stranger the longer he worked it. Normally, he liked to meet his clientsâ face to face. But while he couldnât be sure, instincts heâd honed over a lifetime as an investigator told him, this woman hiding in shadows was not the same woman who employed his services. No, this woman was more like the middle man, sent to make sure he kept on task. Whoever had hired him liked their anonymity. She didnât give him anything: no name, no contact details, not even a drop point.
Heâd just gotten a call from a female voice asking for his services. The next day heâd woken up to a note in his mailbox telling him to go to a specific place, at a specific time with a deposit already in his account as incentive. The fact his security surveillance never noticed anyone going into his mailbox, told him two things. The letters were being delivered magically, and whoever he was dealing with was powerful. Maybe even one of the Powers themselves. He may hate spying on a friend of the Angel, Gadriel. But, he was pragmatic enough to understand the precarious position he found himself in. Dealing with the gods was a very dangerous, but profitable endeavor. However, heâd been in this industry a long time and understood when to bend and when to stand for a cause.
